Angel Episode 6-1: "The End" by Peter Emuss
Scene:
The churchyard
again. But this time, we see BUFFY and a group of three Slayers,
including VI heading for the church very stealthily. They are all
beweaponed, BUFFY carrying an axe
BUFFY: We know this
thing has strength like a vampire and it has no compunction about using
it. It won’t dust in sunlight, so don’t rely on
stakes getting the job done.
She turns to look
back at her army.
BUFFY: He’s
got two accomplices, one demon, one unknown. We need to take him out
and identify who or what his accomplices are, before they finish their
spell. Everyone clear?
Three heads nod.
BUFFY: Then
let’s go.
She shucks her axe
and they continue towards the church.
Scene:
Inside the
belfry. LORNE is sitting cross-legged in the middle of a circle of
sand, with the Token of Eigos sitting in front of him. ELISE is sitting
in a corner watching with interest, whilst CONNOR is poring
disorganisedly over a book and some handwritten notes.
LORNE: Now what do I
do?
CONNOR: You take the
Pythic Miasma and…
LORNE:
You’ve got the Pythic Miasma? I thought that was meant to be
guarded by monks and God’s holy light or something.
CONNOR (smile): It
was.
LORNE: Well, okay.
But why do we have to have the Pythic Miasma?
CONNOR: Angel could
be anywhere, buried deep within any number of Wolfram and Hart hell
dimensions. There are barriers that need to be breached.
LORNE: It’s
just I’m not really comfortable with the idea of consuming an
energy field that’s bigger than my own head. Evil Overlord
rule 22. Did I mention that I wasn’t very good with magic?
CONNOR reaches down
into the suitcase and brings out some kind of jewel. It’s
flashing with it’s own light and writhes in his hands,
constantly liquid, moving of its own accord.
LORNE: Yikes.
CONNOR: Apparently I
have to smash it into your forehead.
LORNE: Yeah,
I’m not loving this plan. What happens when it fries my brain?
CONNOR (flicking
through notes): It should be safe.
LORNE: Well, excuse
me if I ask for a second opinion. I don’t even know if
you’ve translated that right. Where’s Wesley when
you need him? I’ll bet he’d do a better job of this
magic business than me, you should go and find him.
CONNOR (without
looking up from the book): Wesley’s dead.
LORNE reacts, for the
first time showing emotion at the fate of Angel Inc.
CONNOR: It says here
that once we’ve done the Pythic Miasma thing, the rest of the
spell should do itself.
LORNE: What happened
to the others?
CONNOR (looks at
LORNE): I thought you didn’t care.
A tear rolls down
LORNE’s face and plops onto the wooden floorboards.
LORNE: Well, I lied.
What happened to them?
CONNOR is silent for
a moment, looking into the book again.
CONNOR: I
don’t know. Wesley and you were the only ones I could trace.
<beat> Are we going to do this?
LORNE: Do I have a
choice?
CONNOR: No.
LORNE: Then I guess
we’d better. <beat> <as if
toasting> To save Angel! Or to explode my head, whichever comes
sooner.
LORNE closes his
eyes. CONNOR raises the Pythic Miasma and brings it down sharply on
LORNE’s forehead. There is a crack of electricity and
he’s thrown across the room.
ELISE: Connor!
She goes to him and
he struggles up onto his elbows to look.
The Pythic Miasma has
stuck to LORNE’s forehead and is glowing brighter and
brighter and brighter. CONNOR and ELISE can’t look at it
anymore and they turn away. Suddenly LORNE cries out, and a beam of
pure white light shoots from the Miasma into the Token of Eigos. The
Token levitates, glowing from inside to out under the force of this
beam. There’s a definite sound effect, like a high-pitched
buzzing, whirring noise.
Scene:
Outside the
church. BUFFY and the Slayers are by the door, getting ready to go in.
Then the belfry lights up with the brilliant white light, shining out
from the cracks in the walls and through the windows.
VI: We’re
too late. They’ve started.
BUFFY: We have to get
up there.
She swings her axe
into the big doors (the ones that CONNOR barricaded earlier) and starts
chopping her way through.
Scene:
ANGEL’s
cell. He’s still suspended from the chains and looking
decidedly drawn. Suddenly his eyes flicker open and he gasps. We can
hear the buzzing and whirring of the spell working.
Scene: Inside the belfry. CONNOR hears the sound of axes
chopping and runs to the door.
CONNOR:
They’ve found us!
Shot of ELISE looking
petrified.
CONNOR:
Don’t worry. I won’t let them hurt you.
He turns back to look
at LORNE. The whirring, buzzing noise increases in volume and pitch and
both ELISE and CONNOR sink to their knees, holding their ears.
Scene:
Inside the church. BUFFY’s just got through the barricade,
when the sound reaches her. The Slayers fall, clutching at
their ears at this horrific sound.
Scene:
Inside the belfry. LORNE yells, crying out as the light intensifies,
building a ball of light around the Token. We see the Token start to
melt, dissolving away and the light intensifies to white out
the entire screen.
When it fades,
CONNOR, ELISE and LORNE are lying comatose, slumped to one side and
standing in front of him, proud, tall and looking around in amazement
is….
SPIKE.
Fade
to black
