Scene: Another hotel room, almost identical to the one from earlier. ELISE is sitting in exactly the same position, reading a magazine this time.

There is a noise at the window and she turns her head to see who it is. CONNOR is sitting on the windowsill with a shit-eating grin on his face. ELISE relaxes.

ELISE: Connor, don’t you ever use the door? Or is that not superheroish enough for you?

CONNOR steps into the room and pulls an unconscious LORNE in after him. ELISE jumps about a foot in the air.-

ELISE: Jesus!

CONNOR: Elise, it’s okay. He’s harmless.

She approaches LORNE with trepidation.

ELISE: Is that… a demon?

CONNOR: He’s unconscious. We had some trouble on the way over here.

She bends down to look at him, when suddenly LORNE’s eyes open. ELISE stumbles backwards in surprise and LORNE is up on his feet, behind ELISE and holding a knife to her throat.

LORNE: Don’t move mop-top, or I’ll kill her!

CONNOR: Mop-top?

ELISE (strangled voice): Connor?

CONNOR (sitting down on the bed, unconcerned): Don’t worry Elise, he won’t do it.

LORNE (struggling for bravado): I will. I’m… I’m a demon on the edge.

CONNOR starts to sing.

CONNOR: I’m on the outside, I’m looking in. I can see through you, see your true colours...

ELISE (increasingly worried): Connor!

LORNE hears the singing and slowly releases ELISE, looking completely wonderstruck.

LORNE: What the dickens?

As soon as LORNE’s knife stops pressing on her throat, ELISE turns around and kicks him in the shin, then knees him between the legs, then runs over to where CONNOR’s sitting on the bed. LORNE winces, obviously more concerned about his shin than his crotch.

LORNE: Ow! That hurt! <recovers himself> Course it would’ve hurt a lot more if my testicles actually lived between my legs.

ELISE (curiosity overriding revulsion): Where do you have your… you-knows?

LORNE: You think I’m gonna tell you after what you just did?

CONNOR: Left armpit.

LORNE (indignant): Hey!

LORNE’s waving the knife around in his overly dramatic gestures and CONNOR takes the opportunity to grab it out of his loose grip. He puts one hand on LORNE’s throat, slams him against the wall and points the knife at LORNE’s left armpit.

CONNOR: And I’ll remove them if you touch my sister again.

He lets LORNE go (keeping the dagger). LORNE moves his shoulders and puts a hand to his neck, trying to pretend that he’s merely inconvenienced, rather than scared.

LORNE: Okay, okay. Mind the suit junior. It may not look like it now, but this cost a pretty penny.

CONNOR (sits back down on bed): I need your help.

LORNE: You do? Well that’s great! No.

CONNOR: You don’t even know what with?

LORNE: I already know that I don’t want anything to do with you.

CONNOR: I saved your life!

LORNE: <enthusiastic faux-sincere> Thank you. <beat> And goodbye.

He goes for the door. CONNOR hurries to beat him there, slamming it shut.

LORNE: What, so I’m your prisoner? Trust me junior, you don’t want to be around me at the moment. You’ll get more trouble than you can handle.

He opens the door again.

CONNOR: It’s for Angel.

LORNE pauses for a brief second.

LORNE: Never heard of him.

He goes for the door and CONNOR slams it shut again.

CONNOR: How long do you think you’re gonna live like this? Surviving day to day, hunted constantly, sleeping in your pretty penny suit? I can help.

LORNE (suddenly losing the place and shouting): No-one can help me! Understand this junior, I don’t know who you think you are, but nothing can stop what’s coming for me. Not you and not An… not anybody. All I can do is try and get a good head start. Rio sounds nice.

CONNOR: Angel could help.

LORNE: Angel’s dead. And so am I.

He opens the door again and this time CONNOR doesn’t stop him. LORNE puts on his Homburg and steps out into the hallway. Only to be confronted by a fighting axe that slams into the wall just inches from his head. LORNE has a brief second of staring at it in shock, then he dives back into ELISE and CONNOR’s room, slamming the door behind him.

LORNE: On second thoughts, what can it hurt to hear you guys out?

CONNOR: Elise, get behind the bed.

ELISE: Bu…

CONNOR: Do it! Don’t come out until I come back.

CONNOR opens the door and pulls the axe out of the wall and struts out towards the thrower. LORNE cowers behind the bed with ELISE.

LORNE (to ELISE): Is your brother always this strange?

Scene: ANGEL’s cell. ANGEL is still crouched in the corner, staring fixedly at the corner where the girl was.

VOICE (laughing): You are even more fun that I could possibly have imagined.

ANGEL (eyes not leaving the corner): Who are you?

VOICE: A fan of turmoil. And you, my dear Angel, seem determined to cause as much of that as you can.

ANGEL stands up.

VOICE: A vampire who doesn’t feed, who doesn’t kill. A soul that yearns for happiness and yet can never have it. <laughs> I do like gypsies. They are… imaginative.

VOICE-DARLA: The whirlwind Angelus. But turned forever inwards, destined only to cause pain, misery and turmoil to all those around him. <laughs and transmutes to normal VOICE laugh halfway through>

ANGEL (statement, not question): You work for Wolfram and Hart.

Again the symbol and message on the wall – You’re looking in the wrong place.

ANGEL: Then who do you work for?

The voice is silent though and ANGEL spins around, looking for something, anything.

ANGEL: What do you want with me?

Still silence and ANGEL slams his hands against the wall again.

ANGEL: What do you want from me!

VOICE (deeper and more sepulchral): Chaos.

The word echoes and is accompanied by near hysterical evil laughter from the VOICE.

Suddenly the chains fly to ANGEL’s limbs, manacles snapping around his wrists and ankles, hoisting him back to his position as before, like living vines. ANGEL yells and hollers, but he’s alone.

Scene: ELISE’s hotel room. LORNE and ELISE are still crouched behind the bed.

LORNE: Do you think it’s safe?

ELISE: Connor said to wait until he came back in.

LORNE: What if he’s not coming back in?

ELISE: He’s coming back.

LORNE: And if he doesn’t?

ELISE: Then I guess it won’t be safe.

There is the sound of the door slamming open.

ELISE <standing up>: Connor?

It’s not CONNOR. Facing her is a big demon, bigger than the Garvanesc, with a spiky corona around its head and no real discernable neck. ELISE screams.

The demon walks towards ELISE who is doing a rabbit-in-headlights impression, just standing there screaming. Then CONNOR comes flying in and tackles the big demon, wrapping his arm around its head and twisting to snap what little neck it has. ELISE hasn’t stopped screaming as the demon slumps to the floor in front of her.

CONNOR goes to her and puts his hands on her shoulders.

CONNOR: Elise, Elise. It’s okay. They’re gone.

ELISE: Wh… wh…what were they?

CONNOR (looking down at corpse): It doesn’t matter. They’re gone now. <beat> Lorne?

LORNE comes up from behind the bed.

LORNE: Oh thank the gods.

CONNOR: We need to move. <telling him, not asking> You’re coming with us.

LORNE: How do you know my name?

CONNOR: I u… It doesn’t matter.

LORNE steps over the demon with distaste and heads for the door.

LORNE (grumbling to himself): A lot of things seem not to matter at the moment.

CONNOR turns back to ELISE who is staring fixedly at the body of the demon.

CONNOR: Elise? Elise! <gets her attention> It’s okay, it’s all gonna be all right.

She hugs him tightly and he hugs her back, closing his eyes to enjoy this bit of family. After a second:

CONNOR: We need to get going. Where’s your stuff.

ELISE: It’s in the suitcase. By the bed.

CONNOR: You didn’t unpack?

ELISE: I’m the organised one remember? I knew you’d get yourself into trouble, so I kept everything ready to travel.

She’s still very pale, but a little of the sibling hectoring’s come back into her voice. CONNOR kisses the top of her head.

CONNOR: What would I do without you?

ELISE: Get into a lot more trouble with Mom and Dad.

Scene: A churchyard. The figures of ELISE, CONNOR and LORNE can all be seen running across the ground, occasionally casting nervous glances backwards.

Scene: Inside the church. CONNOR, ELISE and LORNE all enter through big wooden doors and slam them behind them.

CONNOR: I think we lost them.

He gets a large wooden brace and slots it into position across the doors, bolting them shut. He then sets to work against a large dresser, trying to push it in front of the door.

LORNE: The barricading ourselves in really helps to sell that.

The dresser gives and turns over to fall in front of the door with a loud crash.

CONNOR: Just want to make sure we’re safe. <flashes a cheeky grin> Relax Lorne.

He walks away towards the stairs.

LORNE: Yeah, and how do you know my name kid?

CONNOR just carries on walking up the stairs. ELISE follows him, carrying the suitcase. LORNE watches them and looks at the barricaded door, then shrugs his shoulders and starts to follow.

LORNE (to himself): I’ve got a bad feeling about this.

Scene: The belfry of the church. CONNOR, ELISE and LORNE enter through a small wooden door. CONNOR draws the bolts behind them. ELISE sets down the suitcase. LORNE turns to CONNOR.

LORNE: So now we’re in a bell-tower. Now what?

CONNOR: Now we’re gonna do some magic.

LORNE: Oh no, I’m not into the dark mojo.

CONNOR: You’ve done it before. The sanctuary spell to keep Angelus from hurting people, the spell to help Cordelia.

LORNE (remembering): Yeah, and look how well all of those went. <suddenly realising> Hey, how do you know all of that?

CONNOR: Didn’t you read me when I sang?

ELISE: Read?

CONNOR: Lorne can read your aura when you sing and he can tell your future. Mostly.

LORNE (offended): Hey!

ELISE (enthralled): Ooh, can you do me?

LORNE: First things first honeybunch. Yeah, I read you junior, but it was a complete jumble, like someone had taken two lives and mixed them together. I couldn’t get a clear grip on much.

CONNOR: So why did you let go of Elise?

LORNE: I got little glimpses. Things that didn’t make sense. You know me, don’t you?

CONNOR: Yes.

LORNE: And I knew you?

CONNOR: Yes.

LORNE: So how come I have no clue who you are now?

CONNOR sighs and sits down on a beam.

CONNOR: I’m Angel’s son.

LORNE makes disbelieving sound and CONNOR glowers at him.

CONNOR: You said you wanted to know what was going on.

LORNE holds up his hands in mock surrender and CONNOR continues.

CONNOR: I was born three years ago…

LORNE: Well, you sure growed up quick.

ELISE: Do you want to hear this or not?

LORNE (to ELISE): You believe this stuff?

She nods.

LORNE: So that would make you Angel’s daughter?

She shakes her head.

LORNE: But aren’t you his sister?

She nods.

LORNE: Is this one of these hidden camera shows? Cause this is about the time Jerry Springer should jump out of the woodwork.

CONNOR (trying to plough on): I was taken to a demon dimension by a man named Daniel Holtz. 17 years passed for me while you guys only had 3 weeks.

LORNE: Of course. Hang on, you said  Holtz?

CONNOR: Do you remember him?

LORNE: Remember him? He blew up my club!

CONNOR: Why?

LORNE: Because Angel and Darla were in it at the time… I can’t really remember what happened next. <Shakes head> It’s like there’s this big gap and I know something happened there, but I can’t…

CONNOR: Was Darla pregnant?

LORNE: Darla’s a vampire! She can’t get pre…

We see a sudden flash of Angel helping a heavily pregnant Darla out of the exploding Caritas.

LORNE: Yes. <suddenly realising> Yes, she was. <beat> Why… How?

CONNOR: That was me. Darla was my mother. When you joined Wolfram and Hart, Angel had me… erased from history. I got to have a normal life, a normal childhood and a normal family, all the stuff he couldn’t give me. And you guys don’t remember me at all. There’s just… gaps where I used to be.

LORNE <thinking>: You’re right. Hey, who gave him the right to play Swiss cheese with my memories?

CONNOR <smug>: This the same Angel that you’d never heard of?

LORNE looks peeved.

LORNE: I still intend never to have heard of him. Angel’s not my business any more; we’re through.
CONNOR: Well that’s too bad. Cause you’re gonna help me rescue him.
